Windows 11 Update Cleared: Phison Investigation Finds No SSD Issues

Recent concerns about the Windows 11 update KB5063878 causing SSD failures have been addressed by a formal investigation. Controller manufacturer Phison, whose hardware was initially suspected, has concluded extensive testing and found no evidence linking the update to widespread problems.

The initial reports claimed that transferring over 50GB of data to a drive that was 60% full or more could cause certain SSDs to become unrecognizable. In response, Microsoft requested user feedback but received no verified reports.

Phison, a key supplier of SSD controllers, has now completed thousands of hours of testing to replicate the alleged failure. The company states the issue was not reproducible and is not caused by the Windows update.

Instead, Phison suggests the problem may be user-related, noting that intensive data transfers generate significant heat. Without proper cooling (such as a heatsink or adequate airflow), thermal stress can lead to drive instability or damage—a universal hardware concern, not a software bug.

With no reproducible cases found and a plausible explanation for potential drive failures, Phison and Microsoft are not directly responsible for the alleged issue. The lack of user reports further indicates this was not a widespread problem.
